Lightning, Thunder or Earthing System Installation International Guideline:
“NFPA 780” and the principle of this system is Faraday Cage or Meshed Conductor system. “NFPA 780” is also complies with IEC, IEEE, AUS/NZ, NEC and other international standard of lightning protection system. Our national Standard BNBC – 2006 also recommended the meshed conductor system. It is the most trusted system which installed over more than a hundred years. This system is very easy to efficient and need less maintenance than other system.
Types of Lightning Protection Systems
There are five types of lightning protection systems for protecting structures against lightning:
• Air-Termination Lightning Protection System (Rods)
• Meshed Conductors Lightning Protection System
• Catenary wire lightning conductor
• Early streamer emission lightning protection system
• Protection by «natural» components
What are the Four Parts of a Lightning Protection System for a Building?
There are four main parts of a properly installed lightning protection system:
Rods or ‘Air Terminals’ – The small, vertical protrusions designed to act as the ‘terminal’ for a lightning discharge “Copper or Aluminium Lightning Arrester”. Rods can be found in different shapes, sizes and designs. Most are topped with a tall, pointed needle or a smooth, polished sphere. The functionality of different types of lightning rods, and even the necessity of rods altogether, are subjects of many scientific debates.
Conductor Cables – Heavy cables (right) that carry lightning current from the rods to the ground “Copper or Aluminum Cable Conductor”. Cables are run along the tops and around the edges of roofs, then down one or more corners of a building to the ground rod(s).
Ground Rods – Long, thick, heavy rods buried deep into the earth around a protected structure “Copper or Aluminum Copper Earth Rod”. The conductor cables are connected to these rods to complete a safe path for a lightning discharge around a structure.
Surge Suppressors – A surge suppressor (sometimes optimistically called a “surge protector”) is a device inserted in the alternating current (AC) utility line and/or telephone line to prevent damage to electronic equipment from voltage “spikes” called transients.

Principles of Lightning Protection System (LPS)
A lightning conductor is a device invented by Benjamin Franklin to protect buildings from lightning strikes. It provides a low-resistance path for the lightning current to flow to the ground, preventing any damage that would have resulted if the lightning current had passed through the building to the ground. Let us now consider how a lightning conductor acts during a lightning strike.
Inspection and Maintenance of Lightning Protection Systems (LPS)
Regular physical inspection of all the related lightning protection measures and installations should be an integral part of the maintenance programme. Testing of the earth mat for resistivity should be done annually. Any protection measures that are removed during maintenance operations should be restored to their original condition. All surge protection devices (SPDs) should be checked to see whether they are functional. This is normally indicated by a light emitting diode (LED) mounted in the unit. Some devices revert to a fail-safe mode after they are destroyed by a surge, allowing the protected equipment to carry on operating, but without protection. These devices normally have LED indicators and/or contacts that can be set to generate an alarm when they fail. Failure to maintain any piece of equipment will eventually render it useless. This pertains in particular to lightning protect ion devices, and the equipment they are designed to protect.

Lightning Strike Risk Assessment
Performing a lightning risk assessment to determine if a facility needs a lightning protection system requires the engineer to evaluate environmental factors and tolerable risk factors. A calculation is then performed to determine if a lightning protection system with surge protection devices is required.
